Robotic surgery removes colon cancer tumor

73-year-old Mr. Tuoi underwent successful robotic surgery to remove a colon cancer tumor and 27 lymph nodes.

A colonoscopy and CT scan at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City revealed a 5 cm tumor at the junction of Mr. Tuoi's ascending and transverse colon, near his liver. Doctor Do Minh Hung, Director of the Center for Endoscopy and Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgery, diagnosed Mr. Tuoi with stage three colon cancer. The tumor had penetrated the outer layer of the colon but had not yet invaded neighboring organs.

After consultation, the surgical team decided to use robotic surgery for precise tumor and lymph node removal. This approach aimed to enhance surgical effectiveness, reduce complications, and shorten Mr. Tuoi's recovery time. The surgeon controlled the robot to remove 15 cm of the colon around the tumor, resect the end of the ileal mesentery, and connect the ileum to the transverse colon. The surrounding lymph nodes were also removed to prevent cancer cells from spreading.

Mr. Tuoi recovered quickly after the surgery, experiencing minimal pain. He was able to walk and consume porridge and milk after three days and was discharged within a week. The pathology report confirmed stage three mucinous adenocarcinoma, and the 27 removed lymph nodes showed no signs of metastasis. However, because the tumor had reached the serosa, chemotherapy was recommended.

Early detection of colon cancer allows for simpler treatment and a better prognosis, often leading to complete remission. Warning signs of colon cancer can include abdominal pain, digestive disorders, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, and gastrointestinal bleeding. These symptoms are easily mistaken for other common digestive problems. In addition to lifestyle and dietary adjustments, Dr. Hung recommends regular health checkups and colonoscopies for early detection and effective treatment.
