Singer Bi Rain diagnosed with high cholesterol despite diet, weight training

Bi Rain was advised to do aerobic exercise after receiving high cholesterol results during a routine health check-up.

On 20/11, singer Bi Rain (real name Jung Ji-hoon) revealed on his YouTube channel "Season B Season" to fellow YouTuber Tzuyang that he was diagnosed with high cholesterol during a routine health check-up, according to Hankyung newspaper. "They told me I have to do aerobic exercise," he stated.

This diagnosis drew fan attention as the singer is known for his strict diet and rigorous training regimen. Sharing his breakfast habits, the singer and actor said, "I eat two to three boiled eggs and half a handful of nuts. If I don't eat these, I'd be starving. I eat 10 raisins and drink Americano or honey water. I replace carbohydrates with fruit."

He also mentioned eating a late lunch, usually "around 3 PM or 4 PM, 5 PM at the latest. If you maintain that habit, you will definitely lose weight." Additionally, Bi Rain consistently engages in high-intensity workouts such as: boxing, CrossFit, and weight training.

High cholesterol (dyslipidemia) is a condition where LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides are abnormally elevated, while HDL (good) cholesterol is low. Clinical research by leading organizations like: the American Heart Association (AHA) shows that excess LDL-C directly accumulates as plaque in artery walls, initiating atherosclerosis. This process narrows blood vessels, severely impeding blood flow, and is a primary cause of dangerous cardiovascular events such as: heart attack and stroke, leading to a high risk of disability or death.

According to national health screening statistics, by 2020, four out of 10 men over 30 were diagnosed with high cholesterol. Data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service also indicates that the number of patients seeking medical care for related conditions is increasing annually. As of 2024, the 50s and 60s age group accounted for 62,7% of total cases, yet cases in the 20s and 30s age groups are also steadily increasing.

Rain's case highlights that even individuals with intense training and high muscle mass do not always have healthy blood lipid levels. Factors such as: genetic predisposition, visceral fat, or a diet too rich in protein and fat can lead to high LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, even with consistent exercise and strict dietary control.

Elevated blood fat is diagnosed when total cholesterol reaches 200 mg/dL or more, LDL cholesterol 130 mg/dL or more, and triglycerides 150 mg/dL or more. The foundation of treatment involves adjusting diet and increasing aerobic exercise. Experts advise reducing foods high in saturated and trans fats, such as: red meat, fried foods, and processed foods, while increasing consumption of fatty fish, nuts, vegetables, and fruits. For physical activity, they recommend aerobic exercises such as: walking, swimming, or jogging, for at least 30 minutes, three to five times per week. If lifestyle changes are ineffective, patients should combine them with medication as prescribed by a doctor.

Born in 1982, Bi Rain is a renowned South Korean singer and actor. He gained public recognition after starring in the dramas "Full House" and "Red Swan". The star shares a happy marriage with "screen goddess" Kim Tae Hee. They have two children, aged 7 and 5.
