On 20/4, a 25-year-old man showed positive recovery, conscious and with dry wounds, following a two-hour critical surgery. He had been admitted to Viet Duc Hospital's emergency department with two chopsticks, 7-10 cm long, deeply embedded in both eyes after an accident.
Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Hong Ha, Head of the Maxillofacial, Plastic, and Aesthetic Surgery Department, described the incident as an extremely rare medical accident. Multi-slice computed tomography (CT) scans and 3D reconstructions revealed the foreign objects were deeply lodged beneath the orbital floor.
"The foreign objects were deeply lodged beneath the orbital floor, dangerously close to the left eyeball and penetrating backward, stopping precisely next to the large carotid arteries that supply blood to the head, face, and neck", stated Master, Doctor Nguyen Thi Huong Giang from the Maxillofacial, Plastic, and Aesthetic Surgery Department. She added, "Just one more millimeter could have been life-threatening."

Doctor Giang also highlighted the extreme rarity of the case, noting that world medical literature currently contains no records of simultaneous penetrating injuries to both eyes. This is due to the body's natural reflex to shield the remaining eye when the first eye encounters danger.
Faced with this complex case, the emergency on-call team immediately convened multiple specialists for a consultation to determine the optimal surgical approach. In the operating room, surgeons meticulously withdrew the foreign objects millimeter by millimeter, exercising extreme caution to prevent rupturing blood vessels or damaging the eyeballs. The successful two-hour surgery enabled the patient to escape death and retain nearly complete aesthetic appearance and visual function.
