What to eat after cataract surgery?

Patients should increase their intake of protein-rich foods, vitamin C, omega-3, and green vegetables to aid eye recovery and stabilize vision after cataract surgery.

Cataract surgery is a surgical procedure that removes the cloudy lens and replaces it with an artificial one, improving vision. This safe procedure has few complications, and patients can often be discharged the same day. However, after surgery, the eye requires time to stabilize and recover, necessitating proper care and lifestyle adjustments.

According to Master, Doctor Luong Thi Anh Thu from the Center for High-Tech Eye Care at Tam Anh General Hospital Hanoi, nutrition plays a vital role in the recovery process after cataract surgery. A balanced and scientific diet supports eye tissue regeneration, boosts immunity, and limits infections. The doctor suggests several foods to incorporate post-surgery.

Protein-rich foods are crucial for post-surgery recovery. Protein provides essential amino acids for eye tissue regeneration and repairing damage after cataract surgery. Adequate protein intake promotes faster healing, maintains resistance, and supports overall recovery. Patients can choose easily digestible protein sources such as fish, chicken, eggs, tofu, and various legumes.

Vitamin C-rich foods are vital antioxidants. Vitamin C helps neutralize free radicals and aids in repairing damaged cells. After cataract surgery, vitamin C boosts immunity, promotes wound healing, and reduces the risk of inflammation. Excellent sources include fruits like oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, kiwis, strawberries, and fresh vegetables.

Green vegetables offer numerous benefits for eye health. They are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which reduce inflammation and enhance overall well-being. Green vegetables also contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two main carotenoids found in the retina. These compounds help protect the eyes from blue light damage and reduce the risk of age-related eye damage, especially during the post-cataract surgery recovery phase.

Zinc-rich foods support healing and vision. Zinc participates in wound healing, strengthens immunity, and supports visual function. Adequate zinc intake helps the body recover better after surgery. Good sources of zinc include legumes, nuts, whole grains, dairy products, and nutritional yeast.

Omega-3-rich foods are beneficial for eye comfort and health. Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties, support eye health, and reduce dry eyes, a common symptom after cataract surgery. Supplementing with omega-3s helps minimize dryness, redness, and discomfort during the recovery period. Salmon, sardines, and fatty fish are natural sources of omega-3s, suitable for a post-operative diet.

Milk and dairy products provide essential nutrients for recovery. They supply protein, vitamins, and minerals vital for the healing process. Vitamins A, C, and E in milk help protect eye cells from free radical damage, while also boosting immunity and tissue regeneration. Patients should prioritize unsweetened or low-sugar milk, especially those with underlying conditions like diabetes.

Adequate water intake is essential for overall body function and faster healing. Staying well-hydrated ensures the body operates stably and supports quicker post-surgical recovery. Patients should drink about 2-3 liters of water daily, prioritizing plain water or caffeine-free beverages.

Doctor Thu emphasizes that alongside a proper diet, patients must follow medication instructions, attend scheduled follow-up appointments, and avoid eye irritants like dust and bright light. Correct care combined with a scientific diet helps the eyes recover quickly and stabilize vision sooner.
