Why does skin darken and develop melasma in sunny weather?

Recently, with the sunny weather, my skin quickly darkens and many melasma spots have appeared. What are the causes, and what steps should I take to improve this condition? (Kim Hoa, Tay Ninh province)

Skin darkening and the appearance of melasma during sunny seasons are common issues, particularly when ultraviolet (UV) radiation intensity is high and prolonged. UV rays, comprising both UVA and UVB, stimulate melanocyte pigment cells to increase melanin production, a natural defense mechanism for the skin. However, excessive melanin production, pushed to the skin's surface, results in darker skin. If this process continues, melanin can accumulate, leading to uneven skin tone, dark spots, freckles, and age spots.

During sunny periods, the UV index often remains high for many hours daily, making skin more susceptible to rapid hyperpigmentation. UV radiation increases inflammatory cells in the skin, further stimulating melanin production as a protective response. Its high penetration allows UV to damage the dermal layer, depleting collagen. This leaves skin less vibrant and makes uneven skin tone more pronounced.

The extent of skin darkening and melasma varies among individuals, depending on skin type, duration of sun exposure, and overall skin health. Additionally, habits like staying up late, chronic stress, and an unbalanced diet can impair skin recovery, exacerbating these conditions.

It is advisable to consult a dermatologist or skin aesthetic specialist for proper examination and treatment. To manage this condition, consistently combine several measures: daily sunscreen application and thorough physical protection when outdoors. Drink plenty of water and apply moisturizer to strengthen the skin's natural protective barrier. Maintain a healthy diet rich in nutrients to boost skin resilience and preserve its elasticity and smoothness.

Certain natural nutrients, such as Collagen peptide, Sakura, and Pomegranate, can help reduce melanin production, thereby minimizing darkening and melasma. Extracts like P.leucotomos, Litchi, and Lemon support collagen regeneration and protect skin structure. When combined appropriately, these ingredients can contribute to brighter, smoother, and more even-toned skin over time.
