Woman develops parasitic infection after eating raw fish salad

After consuming a raw fish salad, a 55-year-old woman experienced stomach pain, nausea, itching, and a rash. Doctors diagnosed her with a parasitic infection.

On 17/7, representatives from the Ha Hoa Medical Center reported the woman also suffered from fatigue, loss of appetite, and noticeable tracks under her skin resembling worm movements, leading to significant weight loss.

The patient recounted having eaten a raw sesame fish salad with family members a few days before the symptoms appeared. Following an examination and tests, doctors confirmed the parasitic infection diagnosis. Her condition improved after receiving medical treatment.

This is not an isolated incident. The Ha Hoa Medical Center has recently treated several similar cases. Most patients presented with unexplained stomach aches, digestive issues, persistent itching, allergies, fatigue, and weight loss. This condition is more prevalent in rural areas where unsanitary food practices, especially consuming raw or undercooked fish and meat, persist.

Doctors warn that parasites can enter the body through contaminated or undercooked food. These parasites often reside in the intestines, liver, lungs, and can even spread to muscles and other tissues.

Symptoms vary depending on the type of parasite and the site of infection. Typical symptoms include persistent abdominal pain, digestive problems, itching, skin allergies, anemia, pallor, and weight loss. Lung infections can cause respiratory problems and persistent coughing. In severe cases, liver damage and bile duct obstruction can occur.

Many parasitic infections go undetected initially due to mild symptoms that are easily mistaken for common illnesses. If left untreated, long-term parasitic infections can cause chronic damage, severely impacting health and quality of life.

As a preventative measure, doctors advise against consuming raw fish salads and other undercooked dishes. Traditional preparation methods using vinegar, lime, or fermented rice cannot eliminate parasite eggs and larvae.

It is crucial to cook food thoroughly and boil drinking water, avoiding raw or undercooked food. Choose safe and inspected food sources. Additionally, regular deworming every 6 months or annually is recommended, following medical guidelines. Individuals who have consumed raw food and experience unusual symptoms like itching, fatigue, or digestive problems should seek immediate medical attention.
