The prosecution sought the maximum penalty for Khanh on four charges: murder, illegal drug trafficking, illegal possession and use of military weapons, and intentional property damage. The combined sentence recommended is the death penalty.
The indictment read at the Quang Ninh Provincial People's Court stated that Khanh took the life of a police officer on duty, demonstrating contempt for the law. Additionally, Khanh played a leadership role in a drug distribution ring in Quang Ninh.
Yesterday, after repeatedly denying guilt, Bui Dinh Khanh admitted his crimes. "I extend my condolences to the family of fallen officer Nguyen Dang Khai. I am the one who caused comrade Khai's death, and I hope the trial panel, the People's Procuracy representative, and the victim's family accept my apology," Khanh stated.

The prosecution also recommended the death penalty for Ha Thuong Hai and Ngo Van Tuyen. Khanh's girlfriend, Trieu Nguyen Hoai Thuong, was recommended for a sentence of 15 to 18 months in prison, suspended with a probation period of 30 to 36 months, for the crime of concealing a crime.
During the trial, Tuyen pleaded not guilty, but the prosecution rejected his testimony, maintaining its stance that he engaged in illegal drug trafficking.
