On 11/6, Cinzia Dal Pino, a 67-year-old businesswoman who manages a coastal resort, was convicted of voluntary manslaughter (intentional killing under severe provocation).
According to court records, on 8/9/2024, surveillance cameras recorded Dal Pino driving her car in pursuit of Noureddine Mezgui, a homeless Moroccan national, in the town of Viareggio.
Dal Pino allegedly drove her car into Mezgui, who was walking on the sidewalk, then repeatedly reversed and struck him again until he collapsed. The businesswoman approached Mezgui, who lay motionless, retrieved the stolen bag, and then drove away. Dal Pino was arrested the following day at a nearby church.
According to investigators, Mezgui died from a severe tear to his abdominal aorta and internal bleeding.

During a previous court hearing in 12/2025, Dal Pino alleged that Mezgui had "run" towards her after she placed her handbag on the passenger seat of her car, making her think "he would harm me".
Dal Pino explained her decision to pursue Mezgui, stating she had "everything in the bag", including identification documents, a watch, and a notebook containing all her bank account passwords and other important login details. "I did not want that man to be able to track them down", Dal Pino said.
She testified in court that she "did not want to kill him, only to knock him down to stop him".
Dal Pino's defense also alleged that Mezgui had threatened her with a knife, but police found no knife at the scene.
Prosecutors sought a life sentence, arguing that Dal Pino deliberately drove into Mezgui in excessive retaliation. Meanwhile, the businesswoman's defense lawyer requested the charge be changed to "negligent excess of self-defense".

The court sentenced Dal Pino to 18 years in prison but allowed her to temporarily serve her sentence at home under house arrest. If the conviction is upheld after the final appeal, she may have to enter prison to serve the remaining time.
Dal Pino's lawyer announced an appeal, while the Mezgui family's lawyer stated the verdict was "the decision we had been waiting for".
According to local media, a restorative justice process has been initiated, and if both parties reach an agreement, Dal Pino's sentence could be reduced.
