On 26/12, Mai, from Ho Chi Minh City, was detained by the An Giang provincial criminal police department for investigation into theft.
The suspect has two prior convictions for theft and was released from prison last year. Recently, he rented a room in Thoai Son commune, An Giang province.

Three days ago, Mai rode a motorbike over 80 km, carrying pliers, a wrench, and lock-picking tools, to Hong Ngu ward, Dong Thap province, to survey houses in the market area.
Around 2 a.m. on 24/12, Mai approached a house in Hamlet 4, used a wrench to break the window bars, and broke in. He took stacks of 500,000 dong banknotes, gold bars, rings, and other jewelry, totaling about one billion dong, before fleeing.

After residents reported the theft, police extracted security camera footage from the area and roads, identified the suspect, and tracked him.
By 3 p.m. the next day, criminal detectives, in coordination with police from communes and wards in An Giang province, arrested Mai at his rented room in Thoai Son commune before he could sell the stolen assets.
Evidence seized at the scene included a motorbike, 613 million dong, and a quantity of gold jewelry.
