On 26/12, the My Quy Tay Border Guard Post announced it had handed over Long to the Ho Chi Minh City Police Criminal Investigation Department for investigation into murder.

Long's initial confession revealed that two nights prior, while at home, he overheard his wife arguing on the phone with an individual who threatened her. Long then called to arrange a meeting with this person at the Phu Nhuan market area. Around 10 p.m., he had a friend drive him to the rendezvous point, where he encountered a woman and four men. One of the men admitted to having spoken with Long on the phone earlier. A heated argument and scuffle ensued, during which Long reportedly drew a knife and repeatedly attacked.

After the attack, Long fled the scene and was driven by his friend to his home in Go Vap district, where he spent the night. Deciding to escape to Cambodia, he took a vehicle to the Moc Bai border gate area, then changed direction towards the My Quy Tay border gate. This morning, as Long was completing exit procedures, authorities discovered and arrested him.
