Husband attacked, 'constantly threatened to kill his wife'

His wife left for her mother's home due to a suffocating marriage, and Hoang Loc Thuong, failing to reconcile, pursued her with a knife when she returned to retrieve belongings, according to the indictment.

Hoang Loc Thuong, 44, residing in Da Phuc commune, Hanoi, has been indicted by the Hanoi People's Procuracy for two crimes: attempted murder and illegal use of military weapons. Thuong has one prior conviction in 2021 for property theft.

Thuong and his wife had been married for 20 years. Following a dispute, on 17/8/2025, his wife took their 12-year-old daughter to her mother's home, approximately 1,5 km away.

The following afternoon, she asked her younger brother to drive her motorbike back to her home to retrieve clothes and her phone. Seeing his wife enter, Thuong asked, "Are you really leaving?" His wife replied, "Who can live with constant threats to kill their wife and children?"

Thuong attempted to talk, wanting to salvage their marriage, but his wife responded, "We'll see." The indictment states that at this moment, Thuong conceived the idea of killing his wife and then committing suicide, immediately grabbing a long knife from the bedroom.

Hearing her cries for help and seeing a wound on her neck, her brother, who was in the living room, immediately ran in and helped her to Thuong's father's house next door.

Thuong, who was self-inflicting a wound on his own neck, saw his wife and brother-in-law leaving and continued to pursue them with the knife. The brother-in-law was slashed two times when he grabbed a broom to strike and impede Thuong, allowing his sister to flee onto the street. Thuong's father and younger brother ran out, hugging and restraining him.

Thuong's violent actions caused his wife 3% health damage and her brother 5%. The Procuracy assessed that the survival of the two victims was beyond Thuong's subjective intent. The knife Thuong used was sharp and pointed, classified under Appendix 5 of the list of highly lethal knives issued under Circular 75/2024 by the Minister of Public Security. Therefore, in addition to attempted murder, Thuong is also being prosecuted for illegal use of military weapons.
