Five months before the sentencing, Khanh again found Nguyen in contact with her ex, leading to an argument. On 11/4, another dispute escalated. Khanh locked the door of their rental room to prevent Nguyen from escaping. During the heated exchange, Khanh became enraged. He then took about one liter of gasoline, poured it on Nguyen, and set her on fire, causing her death.
After committing the crime, Khanh further locked the door, preventing others from rescuing Nguyen.
The judicial panel assessed Khanh's actions as demonstrating a brutal, violent, and cold-blooded nature. They concluded he showed no possibility of rehabilitation or becoming a useful member of society.
