According to El Heraldo, the tragic death of the referee occurred on Wednesday evening, October 7, at a sports center in Hidalgo state during a Mexican wrestling event.
A video released the following day showed the wrestler known as "Hijo de Fishman" (Son of Fishman), whose real name has not been disclosed, taking down an opponent. He then argued with referee Gerardo German Pineda, 75, an experienced figure in the entertainment sport.
Immediately afterwards, the wrestler stood up, approached the referee, and subdued him with a piledriver. This grappling move involves a wrestler holding an opponent's head between their legs before forcefully driving them to the mat.
The referee writhed in pain in the ring while the attacker returned to his corner, where he had left his opponent, and finished him with a face lock between his knees.
After a moment, realizing the referee had not recovered from the attack, the medical team approached to check his condition and confirmed his death.
Authorities launched an investigation to determine the cause of the referee's death. The wrestler was arrested on charges of manslaughter.
The wrestler is the son of Jose Angel Najera Sanchez, better known as Fishman, one of the greatest legends in Mexican wrestling.
The referee was also a pillar of lucha libre in Hidalgo state, with over three decades of experience. After retiring from wrestling, he became a referee, earning respect and affection.
For many Mexicans, lucha libre is more than just a sport; it represents the culture and identity of the Aztec people. Characterized by colorful masks, daring acrobatic moves, and dramatic battles, it has been officially recognized as Mexico's Intangible Cultural Heritage.
