Pawn shop owner arrested for enticing many into fraudulent investment scheme

Dang Quoc Thanh, a pawn shop owner in Dak Mil commune, has been accused of providing false information to solicit capital contributions, subsequently appropriating over 10 billion VND from numerous individuals.

On 25/5, Lam Dong Provincial Police announced the temporary detention of Dang Quoc Thanh, 25, for investigation into fraudulent appropriation of property.

According to investigators, last April, Lam Dong Provincial Police received public reports alleging that Dang Quoc Thanh showed signs of fraudulent appropriation of property, prompting a swift investigation to verify information and gather evidence.

Initial investigation results identified Thanh as the owner of the SIN 8386 pawn shop in Dak Mil commune. From 2025 to early this year, he allegedly provided various false pretenses, such as needing capital to pawn assets or to purchase liquidated pawned assets, to build trust and solicit capital contributions from others.

Believing him, many individuals entrusted Thanh with a total of over 10 billion VND. However, after receiving the funds, Thanh reportedly misappropriated them for personal use.

The investigation agency stated that the suspect has initially admitted to the criminal act.

Authorities urge anyone who is a victim or has information related to Dang Quoc Thanh's actions to promptly contact the Investigation Police Agency Office of Lam Dong Provincial Police to assist with the ongoing investigation.
