US police shoot, subdue machete-wielding man in restaurant

After a man brandishing a machete became aggressive, overturned a table, and attacked, police fired multiple shots and deployed a police dog to subdue and remove him from a restaurant.

According to the Oxnard Police Department in California, officers received multiple calls reporting a man, later identified as Anastacio Meneses, brandishing a machete on the street shortly after 12h on 20/4.

Upon arrival, officers located Meneses inside a restaurant. They successfully evacuated some diners, but two employees remained trapped inside.

A video released by police on 8/5 shows officers attempting to de-escalate the situation, urging Meneses to cooperate. They warned him he would be shot if he picked up the knife.

Police commanded Meneses to stand up, place his hands behind his head, move away from the machete, and exit the restaurant. Meneses initially stood up, but then quickly lowered his hands, grabbed the machete, overturned a table, and raised the weapon.

Officer Brandon Castillo fired three shots, striking Meneses and causing him to fall to the floor. However, Meneses quickly rose, raising the machete and lunging forward to attack.

Castillo fired three more shots. Meneses fell to the ground a second time but still held onto the machete.

Officers continued to communicate with Meneses for over two minutes, hoping he would drop the machete and crawl towards them for first aid. Meneses did not comply with the commands.

Immediately, Officer James Kitka deployed a police dog, which bit Meneses' sleeve to pull him out. Meneses swung the machete, tearing the dog's upper lip.

Ultimately, officers disarmed Meneses. He was transported to a hospital for treatment of multiple gunshot wounds, primarily to his hands.

After his release from the hospital, Meneses faces several criminal charges. These include: assault with a deadly weapon, assaulting a police dog, and using a deadly weapon with intent to resist arrest.

The police dog sustained minor injuries but recovered and returned to duty.
