Affair uncovered through 50 insurance policies

A wife in Guangxi filed a lawsuit to annul 50 insurance policies worth 10 million yuan after discovering her husband's affair with an insurance agent.

The intricate details of a marital dispute in Liuzhou, Guangxi, China, have come to light, revealing a husband's seven-year affair with an insurance agent that led to the purchase of 50 insurance policies totaling 10 million yuan. The wife, Zhen, discovered her husband Guo’s illicit relationship, initiating a legal battle to reclaim the significant sums involved.

According to court records, Zhen and Guo, married for many years with a daughter, faced marital discord when Zhen found suspicious messages between Guo and Li, an insurance agent 8 years his junior, in early 2017. Despite Zhen's warnings, Guo continued his clandestine contact with Li for seven years.

The affair came to a head in late 2024 when Zhen was informed of an eligible 4,000 yuan (approximately 560 USD) medical insurance payout during hospital discharge. Guo claimed he had purchased insurance for his wife and daughter. Suspicious, Zhen checked her husband's phone while he slept, uncovering numerous money transfers to Li.

Guo had made transfers to WeChat accounts named "Xe nang Linde" and "Thien dao thu can", both confirmed by authorities to belong to Li. These transactions, dating back to Qixi Festival in 2017, often involved symbolic amounts such as 520 yuan (which in Chinese sounds similar to "I love you") or 13,14 yuan (homophonous with "forever and ever"), serving as clear indicators of an intimate relationship.

Zhen's investigation revealed that over seven years, Guo had transferred more than 3 million yuan (approximately 447,000 USD) to Li. Through Li, Guo signed over 50 insurance contracts, with total premiums exceeding 10 million yuan (1,5 million USD). This substantial volume of sales directly contributed to Li's rapid career advancement, culminating in her promotion to business manager.

In 2025, Zhen filed a lawsuit against Li in Chengzong District Court, demanding the return of the money her husband had transferred. She also sued Li's husband, seeking joint liability on the grounds that the transferred funds had become part of their marital assets.

During court proceedings, Li denied the affair, arguing that the WeChat transfers alone were insufficient proof of an illicit relationship. "Is there any law prohibiting us from going to a hotel to discuss business?", Li stated, further accusing Guo of fabricating the story with his wife due to his alleged financial difficulties regarding insurance payments.

However, police records contradicted Li's claims, showing Guo still owned over 10 properties and was not in financial distress. Guo himself admitted to visiting hotels with Li more than 180 times, confirming that their relationship was a decisive factor in his extensive insurance purchases.

In 12/2025, the court ruled that Guo and Li had an illicit relationship, ordering Li to return nearly 900,000 yuan (approximately 126,000 USD) in invalid gifts, along with accrued interest. Li's subsequent appeal was rejected by the appellate court in 6/2026.

Zhen is now pursuing further legal action, suing her husband, Li, and the insurance company, demanding the cancellation of all 50 contracts to reclaim the 10 million yuan in premiums. The insurance company's representative argued in court that Guo's continuous purchase of products over seven years was a conscious act, repeatedly confirmed, not an impulsive decision or the result of coercion.

The dispute regarding the insurance contracts remains under court review. The case has garnered significant attention on Chinese social media, attracting over 100 million views. Many observers anticipate that reclaiming the insurance money will be complex, given that the initial purchase transactions were legally executed.
