Delivery driver cancels orders, saves over 600 households from gas explosion

After detecting an unusual gas smell, Yin Zhongyu, a delivery driver in Hangzhou, chose to forgo multiple deliveries to alert the police, preventing a potential explosion for 647 households.

On the afternoon of 10/3, authorities in Shangcheng district, Hangzhou, held a commendation ceremony for Yin Zhongyu, 36, a native of Harbin. The food delivery driver was honored for his vigilance, which helped prevent a gas leak incident in late February.

The incident occurred around 12:00 on 28/2. While driving on Qianjiang Road to make deliveries during rush hour, Yin detected a strong gas odor. Despite significant time pressure, a sense of unease prompted him to turn back and investigate. "I had many unfinished orders", the driver with 6 years of experience recalled, "but that gas smell lingered in my mind."

Yin stopped to check when he smelled gas. *Screenshot from video*.

After inquiring with residents and confirming the gas leak originated from an underground pipe, Yin immediately alerted the police. Within about 5 minutes, firefighters and an emergency rescue team arrived. According to authorities, this was a serious leak that directly threatened the safety of 647 households and 20 nearby businesses.

Because he remained at the scene awaiting the authorities, Yin missed 5 pending deliveries. This resulted in a direct deduction from his income and a reduction in his credibility score on the app. "I did feel a bit of regret then because it impacted my performance", he stated, "but if I encountered a similar situation again, I would still do it."

In recognition of Yin's actions, the local Department of Social Work presented him with a certificate of commendation and a rescue kit. Following the ceremony, the driver quietly placed the bouquet into the delivery box on the back of his motorcycle and resumed his daily work.

Yin Zhongyu is not the first delivery driver whose quick thinking has saved lives. In 8/2025, in Hunan province, Ms. Chen, the owner of a cold storage facility, became trapped in a freezer at -20 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes. As she began to suffer from exhaustion and hypothermia, delivery driver Liu Xu, passing by, heard unusual noises and promptly rescued her. Ms. Chen later presented him with flowers, a bonus, and even offered company shares to express her gratitude.
