Around 1 AM on 17/9, a Leawood, Kansas, police officer on patrol noticed a small dog, already wearing a leash, standing in the middle of the road. The animal did not flee, but barked repeatedly at the patrol car, prompting the officer to investigate. Initially, the officer rolled down his window and said, "Hey buddy, why don't you go home?". However, seeing the dog turn and slowly run forward, frequently stopping and looking back as if waiting for him, the officer recognized an unusual sign and decided to follow.
After about half a block, the dog turned into the driveway of a house, where a second dog was waiting. The officer exited his vehicle, turned on his flashlight, and followed the two animals to ensure they were home. Shining his light through the open garage door, he discovered the homeowner lying on the concrete floor.
The man stated he had fallen in an awkward position over three hours prior, unable to stand up or call for help in the middle of the night. At the time of the incident, he had been preparing to walk the dog, which is why the animal was still wearing its leash.
The patrol officer immediately called a medical emergency team to the scene to provide aid to the victim. "Thanks to the homeowner's faithful four-legged friend, our officer found him and provided timely assistance. The man's health is now stable at home," stated the Leawood Police Department.
Video footage from the officer's body camera, posted on Facebook in early October, attracted thousands of interactions. Many pet owners suggested that the two dogs coordinated during their owner's distress: one stayed in the garage to watch over him, while the other ran to the main road to find help.
