Driver returns 1 billion VND found on highway

A driver in Bac Ninh found a bag containing 1 billion VND (approximately 40,000 USD) on a highway and promptly sought authorities to return it to its rightful owner on the afternoon of 23/1.

Nguyen Van Huan, 46, from Tien Luc commune, Bac Ninh, discovered a white bag on the Ninh Binh - Hanoi highway on 23/1. Around 12:55, while driving from Ninh Binh to Hanoi, Huan spotted the bag in the middle of the road, approximately 50 meters past the Liem Tuyen toll booth. Believing it to be lost property, he pulled his vehicle into the emergency lane and retrieved it.

Upon inspecting the bag, Huan found 20 neatly bundled stacks of 50,000 VND notes, totaling 1 billion VND. He immediately contacted the highway's operating unit, requesting a camera review to identify the vehicle that dropped the bag.

A representative from Highway Traffic Patrol Team No. 3, under the Traffic Police Department, confirmed that surveillance systems recorded the white bag falling from a pickup truck with license plate 29C-998.83 at the highway entrance early on the afternoon of 23/1.

Concurrently, Duong Thuy Van, from Me Linh, Hanoi, had posted on social media traffic groups, seeking a bag of money that had fallen from her pickup truck after she had withdrawn it from a bank and was driving through the area.

After cross-referencing the license plate information and matching the time, Huan proactively contacted Van and arranged a meeting at his hometown. At 17:00 on 23/1, with the village head and Tien Luc commune authorities as witnesses, the entire sum was successfully handed over to its owner.

"I simply believed that this was someone's hard-earned property, and if I found it, I had to return it rather than keep it," Huan stated. Grateful for his actions, Van presented him with gifts and 5 million VND as a token of appreciation for his family.

Lieutenant Colonel Quach Van Hung, head of Tien Luc Commune Police in Bac Ninh province, confirmed that local security forces verified the incident. While the handover did not occur at the commune police headquarters, it was witnessed by the village head and neighbors from Nguyen Van Huan's residence.
