Five generations in one family share september 14th birthday

Baby Arthur’s birth on september 14th helped the Harlow-Bell family set a Guinness World Record for five consecutive generations sharing the same birthday over 118 years.

The unique streak began with great-grandfather Wilber Harlow, born on 14/9/1907. It continued with his daughter, Addie Harlow, born in 1949; Addie’s son, Fred Harlow, born in 1972; Fred’s daughter, Emma Bell, born in 1997. Finally, Emma’s son, Arthur Bell, arrived on his due date, 14/9/2025.

This remarkable coincidence occurred in a direct lineage of 5 individuals, not encompassing all family members.

A distinctive feature of this five-generation chain is the alternating genders. "Starting with great-grandfather Wilber, the sequence is male, female, male, female, male, right up to baby Arthur", Emma told KMTV.

The family had long been aware of this unusual occurrence. When Emma was young, she often celebrated joint birthdays with her grandmother Addie and father Fred. Fred frequently stated he did not need birthday gifts, as he already had "the best gift" of sharing a birthday with his mother and daughter.

Addie, however, harbored a different wish. "Since I was little, every year I heard my grandmother tell me, 'You must have a baby boy on September 14th'", Emma recalled. When she became pregnant for the second time and learned the due date was September 14th, she particularly hoped the child would be born on schedule. Despite having had her first child prematurely, Emma was determined to maintain her pregnancy to ensure her second baby arrived on the expected date.

As a result, baby Arthur was born at a hospital in western Omaha, weighing almost 4 kg. Wyatt Bell, Arthur’s father, said the family never thought their son would actually be born on that specific day.

Arthur’s birth helped the family reach the five-generation milestone, prompting them to submit documentation to Guinness for official confirmation. Previously, this record stood at 4 generations, held by multiple families.

Fred Harlow stated he never imagined this coincidence would put his family in the record books. "Children are a special gift. Everything happens for a reason", he said. When his grandson was born, he simply exclaimed, "And just like that, he became the record breaker."

After being officially recognized by Guinness, the family stated they do not want to create pressure for future generations to continue this birthday streak. For them, September 14th is not about extending an achievement, but simply a special occasion for 5 generations to have an additional reason to bond together.
