The controversy began when 21-year-old Maci Mugele, from Oklahoma, posted a video of her son Gunner on social media in late 6/2025. The video, captioned "When your 4-month-old is off the charts," has garnered nearly 20 million views.
Her son, Gunner, born in 2/2025, currently weighs 10.2 kg and wears clothes sized for 1- to 2-year-olds. Mugele said that even in the womb, Gunner was developing ahead of schedule. Born weighing 3.6 kg, he has grown rapidly ever since.
The video has received numerous critical comments. Many social media users called it "child abuse" and expressed pity for the baby, with some even suggesting he try Ozempic, a weight-loss drug.
"I was shocked and saddened that they could say such mean things about a child. I don’t understand how feeding my baby when he’s hungry is abusive," Mugele told the press.

Mugele maintains that neither she nor her doctor are concerned about Gunner's weight. "The doctor says he's healthy. Sometimes, babies are just bigger," she said.
She stated that her son has eaten more than other babies since he was in the hospital and has been declared perfectly normal by doctors.
The reactions from American social media users are understandable given that obesity is a pressing issue in the US. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), childhood obesity rates have increased significantly, from 5% in 1980 to nearly 20% today. The latest data from the National Survey of Children's Health indicates that one in six American adolescents is obese. By age group, the obesity rate is 12.7% for children aged two to five, 20.7% for those aged six to 11, and 22.2% for those aged 12 to 19.
Obesity is recognized as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even cancer.

Alongside the criticism, many have expressed affection for the chubby baby, calling Gunner "healthy and cute."
The NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers' TikTok account commented: "We’re calling dibs," hinting at a future recruitment. Many also believe Gunner's current size indicates he will be tall when he grows up.
Mugele hopes her story will encourage more understanding. "Like the doctor said, he’s perfectly healthy," she affirmed.
