Girl gains fame for pig-catching skill

Having competed in 26 local pig-catching contests this year, Wen Fengqin has brought home 22 pigs, filling her pens and requiring her to share them with friends.

Wen Fengqin, 31, is known as the 'pig-catching master' by residents of Majiang district, Guizhou province, at year-end agricultural fairs. Most recently, at a festival on 26/12, she again created a stir by single-handedly subduing a 38 kg pig in a slippery mud pit.

Footage of the event showed that while many young men slipped or were dragged by pigs, Wen moved with agility. She did not rush the pursuit, instead carefully observing her target, waiting for the animal to slow before lunging and using all her strength to pin it down in the mud. Just dozens of seconds later, she hoisted the pig onto her shoulder, running to the finish line amidst cheers.

"This year I've competed 26 times, only losing my grip four times", Wen shared. Her spoils of victory range from lean 25 kg pigs to hefty ones over 70 kg.

Wen's most memorable moment was confronting a 73 kg pig. It took her nearly half an hour of pursuit to get close. Although organizers only required holding the animal for 5 seconds, she held it firmly for 20 seconds to complete a convincing performance.

Calling herself 'Majiang's Pig-Catching Sister', Wen attributes her physical fitness to regularly playing basketball, weightlifting, and tug-of-war since her school days. Revealing the secret to her 85% win rate, she stated that speed is the decisive factor. "When getting close, you must lunge and pin it down, refusing to let go. Only when the pig is exhausted and stops struggling can you lift it", she said.

The number of prize pigs is so abundant that Wen has to sell or give some away. Currently, her pens still hold about 10 pigs. She plans to butcher pigs for smoked meat this Tet (Lunar New Year) to invite friends.

Wen Fengqin's popularity has helped pig-catching competitions in Guizhou gain wider recognition. These annual events in districts like Majiang, Danzhai, and Huishui are highly entertaining. The rules are simple: whoever catches a pig gets to keep it. Even losers often receive chickens to take home, ensuring "the whole village has fun".
