Late-life marriage tragedy: wives rejuvenate, husbands decline

Contrary to middle-aged wives increasingly tending to their appearance, many husbands neglect their looks, becoming unkempt and causing marriages to cool.

Simon, the man Carol Smith, 59, of London, England, once adored, always appeared neat with a crisp shirt and a tidy haircut. Everything changed rapidly when he turned 50.

Simon stopped shaving, quit exercising, gained weight rapidly, and often walked the dog in sloppy pajamas. He also became increasingly lazy about brushing his teeth and stopped using deodorant. Simon's disheveled state completely contrasted with Carol, who maintained her figure, cared for her skin, and was often complimented on looking younger than her age.

"For more than two years, I haven't been able to bring myself to be intimate with my husband. My friends even mistook him for a homeless person", Carol recounted.

The overwhelming aversion led her to decide to make her husband sleep in the living room 18 months ago. Their two children were also so ashamed of their father that they didn't dare bring their partners home.

Carol's plight appears to be a common occurrence in many modern families. While men's midlife crises were once associated with buying sports cars or having affairs, they now manifest through laziness, sloppiness, and a general disregard for their surroundings.

Eleanor Mills, founder of a community for middle-aged women in England, explains this phenomenon stems from a mismatched rhythm of life. From 25 to 50, women often sacrifice for their families. Once their children are grown, they find time to rejuvenate, beautify themselves, and enjoy life.

"Conversely, men have been under pressure to maintain their professional image for decades. By age 50, they tend to let go, sit idly watching TV, and neglect their appearance", Mills analyzed.

As a result, while ladies attending 50th and 60th birthday parties look increasingly charming and radiant, their husbands become unrecognizable "pot-bellied uncles". This laxity extends beyond physical appearance, leading to mental decay. It is also one of the reasons why 61% of "gray divorces" are initiated by wives.

Sarah King, 45, a dentist in Durham, also lives in disappointment with her husband, who once loved sports. Since turning 40, her husband has become inactive, only sitting in one place. "While I go to the gym 5 times a week, he just devours potato chips and chocolate. As a result, he gained over 10 kg, gasps for breath when awake, and snores loudly enough to shake the house when asleep", Sarah sighed.

Similarly, Amy Brooks, 52, admits she is running out of patience as her once dapper husband has now turned into a grumpy old man who neglects personal hygiene.

"If he were optimistic and positive, even if he were overweight, I would still find him attractive. But with his current state of neglecting shaving and not bothering to bathe, my respect and desire for him have completely faded", Amy shared.
