Man lives in a cave for over 40 years

Sudarmaji, 70, has lived alone in a mountain cave in Jombang for over 40 years, without electricity or internet, drinking rainwater seeping from the rock.

Sudarmaji's dwelling is deep within the jungle of Sumberjo village, Jombang district, bordering Mojokerto district. The cave is situated on a high gorge, with a stream flowing from Anjasmoro peak in front. This rugged terrain forms a natural barrier, completely separating his life from the outside world.

Accessing his home requires a challenging journey. Visitors must travel about 35 minutes by motorbike on a narrow, steep, slippery dirt trail. After parking, a 50-meter steep slope leads to the cave entrance. From Sumberjo village, the only way is a nearly two-hour trek through the forest.

Inside the cave, Sudarmaji lives a life devoid of modern conveniences. There is no electricity, internet, or other amenities. The main chamber, about 35 square meters, serves as his sleeping area with an old mattress and a mat for guests. Opposite this is a rudimentary wood-fired stove. A narrow path deeper inside leads to his meditation spot, where two statues and offerings are placed.

Sudarmaji stated he is originally from Boyolali, Central Java, but declined to share the reason for choosing this reclusive life.

Sudarmaji's sustenance relies entirely on nature. He has no access to clean water for daily use or drinking. Instead, he collects water drops seeping from the rock face into various buckets and containers placed throughout the cave.

Despite living in isolation, Sudarmaji maintains some connection to the outside world. He raises a few chickens and gathers wild vegetables for food. Occasionally, he receives food from visitors or drives his old motorbike down to the village to buy necessities.

The duration of Sudarmaji's stay in the cave is significant. According to Tarmidi, a local forest ranger, he began living there around 1983, 42 years ago. However, the head of Jabung village estimates this period could be up to 50-60 years.

"Previously, a woman from the village helped him, but after her passing, he continued to stay," Tarmidi recounted.

Sudarmaji's unique life recently gained attention after a video about him went viral on social media. Many expressed astonishment at his minimalist lifestyle choice, but many also worried about his health and safety at his advanced age.
