Argentina is currently looking for players to share the burden with Lionel Messi at the World Cup 2026.

In the round of 32 and round of 16, Messi was a key player, contributing significantly to victories against Cape Verde and Egypt. In the quarter-final match against Switzerland on 11/6, he assisted the opening goal before Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez secured the 3-1 victory in extra time.

After the match, a reporter asked Messi about Julian Alvarez's performance: "Has Julian Alvarez transformed into Messi today?".

The Argentina captain denied this, instead praising his younger teammate. He affirmed that Julian Alvarez possesses a distinct playing style, not copying anyone. "Julian just created a golazo, just like his playing habit at Atletico Madrid. I am truly happy to see Alvarez and Lautaro score, bringing a collective victory for the team", Messi said.

Julian Alvarez has risen to become a top world star in the past four years. At the World Cup 2022 in Qatar, he was initially considered a backup option by coach Lionel Scaloni. When given a chance to start in the final group stage match against Poland, the forward, who developed at the River Plate academy, scored the goal that secured a 2-0 victory, and from then on, he kept his place in the starting lineup until the final.

At the World Cup 2026, Alvarez is an irreplaceable key player for Argentina. The 26-year-old forward boasts a collection of titles including: Copa Libertadores, Champions League and Copa America. His consistent performance in the South American qualifiers has made him a vital link in Scaloni's system due to his ability to combine, press, and finish sharply.

Messi's statement quickly created a stir on social media platforms and international media. Many expressed admiration for his action of prioritizing the team's interests. Throughout his playing career, the Argentine superstar has never considered himself an ideal role model.

In 2021, when he received his 7th Ballon d'Or, Messi explained the origin of his humble character in France Football magazine. Growing up in a working-class family, he always remembered the lessons of respecting others and the spirit of hard work taught by his parents.

Returning to the World Cup 2026 arena, the victory against Switzerland reaffirmed Argentina's resilient spirit. Looking ahead to the semi-final match against England on 15/7, Messi places his trust in the strength of unity.

"This team constantly fights to maintain its leading position; the journey to become World Cup and Copa America champions and continuing to be among the top 4 strongest teams this year marks an extraordinary achievement", he said.

The entire Argentina squad underwent a recovery training session on the evening of 12/7 in Kansas City. The starting lineup from the quarter-final rested. Coach Lionel Scaloni's players began a series of tactical training sessions on 13/7, followed by light exercise on 14/7 to accumulate optimal physical fitness for the big match.
