The struggling life of South Korea's 'goddess of youth'

Once famous for her youthful appearance, dentist Lee Su-jin is now facing bankruptcy and a lifestyle change at age 58.

In 2016, at age 48, Lee Su-jin was dubbed the "goddess of youth" by South Korean media after appearing on SBS television's "Same Bed, Different Dreams". She attracted hundreds of thousands of followers due to her wrinkle-free face and slender figure, often mistaken for her daughter's friend.

A graduate of Seoul National University's Dentistry program, Lee was known for her beauty and success. She established a large clinic in Seoul's wealthy Gangnam district. According to Lee, on some days, the clinic generated 100 million won (approximately 75,000 USD) in revenue, utilizing water laser implant technology. She repaid a debt of 600 million won (over 450,000 USD) in three months.

Her high income enabled Lee to live a luxurious lifestyle, purchasing luxury cars and expensive beauty treatments.

In early 2026, Lee Su-jin announced her financial struggles. The dentist stated she closed her clinic in mid-2024, citing a decrease in international patients following the pandemic and harassment from several strangers.

South Korean media reported that Lee had repeatedly informed police about being stalked by a man with a criminal record, who threatened her family and staff. Concerns for her safety ultimately forced her to cease her business operations.

The South Korean public had mixed reactions to the "goddess of youth's" predicament. While some expressed sympathy, many suggested that her past displays of wealth had attracted unwanted attention from malicious individuals.

To cover her current living expenses, Lee now sells health products online. She expressed guilt towards her 25-year-old daughter, Jenna, for no longer being able to provide their former luxurious lifestyle. Jenna had previously defended her mother on social media and shared her plans to find her own job, independent of family finances.

"Even in my dreams, I never thought at this age I would be taking the bus and worrying about money for my cat's medical treatment," Lee said.

At age 58, Lee maintains a weight of 47 kg. She stated that exercise and maintaining her figure are ways to protect her health and preserve her self-esteem. However, in recent social media videos, Lee appeared with puffy eyes and numerous wrinkles. She shared that she had cried many times before finding peace at a convent.

"I am not afraid of getting old. I just hope 2026 brings better new beginnings," she said.
