Why do many people experience 'it rains right after washing the car'?

The phenomenon of 'it raining right after washing the car' is not a curse but stems from psychological illusions and user vehicle cleaning habits.

Motorcycle and car owners often share stories about the "car wash curse." They clean their vehicles on a sunny day, only for an unexpected rain shower to fall shortly after. Science explains this phenomenon through psychological and meteorological factors.

The Baader-Meinhof psychological phenomenon

The Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, also known as the frequency illusion, suggests that people tend to pay more attention to something after a single experience. In this context, car owners vividly remember the rain falling just after their vehicle has been cleaned.

Associate Professor Shahram Heshmat from the University of Illinois at Springfield (US) states that people store events based on "mood memory." According to him, one person recalls positive childhood experiences when in a good mood. A bad mood, conversely, prompts them to think about negative things.

In other words, car owners easily forget sunny days after washing their cars, focusing instead on the moment rain spoils their cleaning efforts. This biased information filtering constantly reinforces the belief that "washing the car will inevitably lead to rain" in their minds.

Murphy's Law

Murphy's Law states: "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong." This principle suggests that the greater the fear of something bad happening, the higher the likelihood of it becoming a reality.

In daily life, people frequently experience bus delays when waiting for a long time or traffic jams when in a hurry. Similarly, those washing their cars often harbor a fear of sudden rain. This invisible obsession automatically attributes a random weather event to a personal "curse."

Laws of probability and habit

The group of people who believe in the "car wash curse" often have a habit of delaying vehicle cleaning. They ignore minor rain showers, waiting for a long stretch of sunny days to accumulate dirt and wash it all at once.

According to meteorological laws, the longer the dry period, the higher the probability of the next rain shower occurring. The moment car owners run out of patience and take their vehicles for cleaning often coincides with peak rain probability. This process is a random act of probability. Therefore, car owners should clean their vehicles as soon as they appear dirty, disregarding concerns about the number of washes and weather cycles.

Random weather patterns

Showers are common in many regions. Washing a car on hot, humid days often increases the chance of rain shortly after. For example, summer thunderstorms typically form in the afternoon. The habit of washing a car in the morning can easily lead to the vehicle encountering rain later in the day.

The phenomenon of rain falling on a freshly cleaned vehicle results from a combination of probability laws, the psychological tendency to remember negative incidents, and microclimatic changes.
