Eleven buffaloes were found dead in a forest area upstream of Ta Trach lake on the morning of 3/6, with authorities initially suspecting a lightning strike. Truong Van Viet, residing in Phu Bai ward, discovered the tragic scene while checking on his family's herd of 12 free-range buffaloes. He found 11 buffaloes deceased, their carcasses already decomposing in a muddy area. Only one small buffalo from the herd survived.
According to Viet, the buffalo herd was a valuable asset, meticulously built up by his family over many years. Many of the animals were of breeding age and served as the family's primary source of income.

Upon receiving Viet's report, the Hue City Livestock and Veterinary Sub-department, in coordination with the Phu Bai ward Economic Department, promptly inspected the scene to verify the cause of death. Initial inspections by authorities suggested that the buffalo herd was likely struck by lightning during the recent period of severe weather. Specialized agencies are continuing to assess the scene to determine the exact cause.
For many years, residents in the mountainous areas of Phu Bai ward and Binh Dien commune have maintained a free-range buffalo farming model within the hydropower reservoir area to boost their economy. Due to the nature of this extensive farming method, residents typically check on their buffalo herds in the forest only after several weeks or months.
