Around 6 a.m., a group of 5 local residents, including a 76-year-old man, were swimming at My Khe beach (near Quang Ngai city). While swimming, they were suddenly caught in a strong current that pulled them further out to sea, with one person carried hundreds of meters from the shore.
The My Khe beach lifeguard team spotted the struggling swimmers. Four lifeguards swam out and helped the group back to shore. At the time, over 300 people were swimming in the area.
Pham Hoang An, deputy head of the My Khe beach lifeguard team, said the strong currents and dangerous riptides were a result of Typhoon Rasaga. The team had posted warning signs and advised people not to swim too far out.
My Khe beach, located about 12 km from the center of Quang Ngai, is a popular tourist destination. Locals also frequent the beach for swimming and morning exercise.
