5 tourists swept away by waves in Phu Quoc

A group of tourists was swept away by waves while swimming at a beach in Ward 7, Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone. Four were rescued, while one remains in critical condition.

The group was swimming in rough seas with strong waves on the afternoon of 31/8 when they were pulled away from the shore. Authorities were alerted and immediately launched a rescue operation, bringing all five individuals back to land.

Four of the tourists – two men, one woman, and a 12-year-old child – are now in stable condition. The fifth, an unidentified man, was in cardiac arrest and not breathing when brought ashore. He is currently receiving emergency treatment at the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone Medical Center.

The An Giang Department of Tourism and the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone People's Committee (UBND) have issued a directive to local tourism businesses, requiring them to have personnel on duty to prevent tourists from entering the water during storms.

Two weeks prior, two tourists died while paddleboarding near Hai Tac Island, Tien Hai Commune, in the former Ha Tien City, An Giang province. They encountered large waves, which capsized their boards and swept them out to sea.
