Can Tho upgrades 7 km of highway 91

A 7 km section of highway 91 through Can Tho city center will be widened from 12 m to 37 m, with 6 lanes. The project, with a total investment of 7,238 billion VND, broke ground on 22/9.

The Can Tho City Transport and Agriculture Construction Project Management Board is overseeing the project. The project begins at the intersection of Cach Mang Thang Tam, Hung Vuong, Tran Phu, and Nguyen Trai streets (formerly Ninh Kieu district) and connects to the currently operational section of highway 91 in Thoi An Dong ward.

The 37 m wide highway will have 6 lanes, a 4 m median strip, and 5 m sidewalks on each side. The project includes a 145 m reinforced concrete bridge over the Binh Thuy river, with a 456 m approach road. Other components include rainwater drainage, landscaping, lighting, and traffic safety features.

The project covers over 27 ha, requiring the acquisition of 7 ha of land, affecting 1,100 households and organizations. Approximately 300 resettlement sites will be needed. Completion is expected in 2027.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Tran Van Lau, chairman of the Can Tho City People's Committee (UBND), described the highway as a vital artery and strategic gateway to the city, noting its importance to voters. He urged the project management board and contractors to mobilize resources, apply modern technology, and ensure quality, progress, and safety.

The 142 km highway 91 connects Can Tho to the Tinh Bien international border gate (An Giang province), passing through several industrial zones and ports along the Hau river. It plays a key role in connecting highways 1, 91B, and 80 with the Lo Te - Rach Soi expressway.
