According to witnesses, the victims' motorbike was traveling close to the left side of a Hau Giang-registered truck as they prepared to turn onto National Highway 1A towards Can Tho. The motorbike clipped the side of the truck and the couple fell onto the road, where they were run over by the truck's rear wheels. The motorbike landed off the road, sustaining minor damage.
