At approximately 9:30 pm, Do Tien Dat, 31, was driving a 7-seater vehicle with two female passengers on the road connecting the Hanoi-Hai Phong and Hanoi-Ninh Binh expressways. While stopped at a red light in Bac Ly commune, Ninh Binh province, their vehicle was rear-ended by a truck with a Hanoi license plate.
The force of the impact propelled the 7-seater forward, causing it to crash into the back of a Hung Yen truck parked in the same direction. This truck, in turn, hit another vehicle stopped in front of it.

The chain reaction left the 7-seater mangled, its front wedged under the truck and its rear crushed. The driver and two passengers were trapped inside. Bystanders attempted to help, but the extent of the damage prevented them from freeing the victims.
About 20 minutes later, the Fire Prevention and Fighting Police and rescue forces arrived. They used a crane to lift the truck and then specialized equipment to cut open the 7-seater, finally extricating the victims.
Do Tien Dat, the driver, died at the scene. The two passengers, Pham Thi Nam, 47, from Phu Long commune, Ninh Binh province, and Truong Thi Thuy, 28, from Nho Quan commune, Ninh Binh province, were injured.
Authorities have preliminarily determined that the truck driver, Ha Duc Viet, was inattentive, leading to the accident.
