Drone sighting near Noi Bai impacts 16 flights

A drone spotted near Noi Bai International Airport on the morning of 6/6 caused a nearly one-hour suspension of takeoffs, delaying 16 flights.

According to a representative from the Northern Aviation Authority, at 10:11, the crew of flight VJ1773 from Ha Noi to Cam Ranh spotted a drone flying in the opposite direction of their aircraft. The plane was at an altitude of approximately 4,700 ft and about 8 km from Noi Bai Airport. The crew subsequently reported the incident to Noi Bai Air Traffic Control Tower.

To ensure aviation safety, Noi Bai Air Traffic Control Tower halted takeoff operations for all awaiting flights starting at 10:15. Arriving flights continued to land as normal.

Immediately, the Northern Aviation Authority collaborated with the Runway Safety Team, police, and military to identify the drone's origin. During the incident response, 16 flights faced delays, including seven from Vietnam Airlines, one from Bamboo Airways, five from Vietjet Air, and three from foreign airlines.

By 11:13, authorities confirmed the drone was no longer present near the airport. Operations at Noi Bai resumed normally.

Authorities continue to work with local police to sweep the area, identify the operator, and determine the drone's source. They are also intensifying efforts to raise awareness about aviation safety regulations.

Recently, several incidents involving drones and other flying objects near airports have disrupted operations. On the evening of 15/3, a flying object near Cat Bi Airport's landing approach caused a four-hour operational disruption, forcing four flights to divert to Noi Bai Airport.

Earlier in February, Da Nang International Airport also reported multiple drone sightings along flight paths, impacting operations.

According to the aviation industry, drone presence in active airspace can force aircraft into holding patterns, alter takeoff and landing procedures, or require diversions to alternate airports. The risk of collision between drones and aircraft is considered a direct threat to aviation safety.
