At 12:18 AM on 17/9, a man cycling close to the median strip in the oncoming lane toward Dong Anh collided head-on with a 4-seater car. The bicycle was broken in two, and the man died at the scene.
By 7 AM the same day, authorities completed their on-site investigation and handed over the victim's body to his family.
A similar accident occurred on the Nhat Tan bridge on 19/2. A car traveling outbound from the city center collided with a motorbike going against traffic in the far left lane. More recently, on 8/8, a foreign man riding a motorbike on the bridge collided with a truck and was then hit by a car, resulting in his death at the scene.
The Nhat Tan bridge, inaugurated in 1/2015, connects to Vo Nguyen Giap road, shortening travel time from Noi Bai airport to downtown Hanoi. The bridge has 8 lanes, with a maximum speed of 70 km/h for motorbikes and 90 km/h for cars.
To prevent motorbikes and bicycles from entering car lanes, the Hanoi Department of Construction is installing lane dividers.
