Around 12:45 p.m., near the Diem Thuy overpass in Diem Thuy commune, Thai Nguyen province, a four-seat electric car broke down and stopped close to the emergency lane. The driver failed to provide adequate warning, and the stationary vehicle was subsequently hit by two seven-seat cars. Approximately six seconds later, a truck crashed into the three cars.
The collision resulted in damage to the front and rear of all four vehicles, blocking all lanes heading from Thai Nguyen to Hanoi. No injuries were reported. The accident caused a traffic jam stretching over 3 km.

About 30 minutes after the accident, police arrived to manage traffic and investigate the cause. To clear a path for other vehicles, officers instructed the truck driver to move into the emergency lane. Traffic flow returned to normal around 2:20 p.m.
The nearly 71 km Hanoi - Thai Nguyen expressway passes through Hanoi, Bac Ninh, and Thai Nguyen. It currently has four lanes and investors have proposed expanding it to six lanes before 2030.
