Heavy rain causes flooding and landslides in Bac Ninh and Thai Nguyen

Over 200 mm of rain caused flooding and isolated several areas in Bac Ninh and Thai Nguyen, leading to landslides and traffic jams on numerous roads.

Starting on the night of 20/8, the midland and mountainous regions of northern Vietnam experienced heavy rainfall, measuring between 50 and 120 mm, with some areas receiving over 250 mm due to southeastern winds from the sea and a cold air mass. Rainfall recorded from 7 PM on 20/8 to 8 AM on 21/8 reached 243 mm in Son Dong (Bac Ninh), 123 mm in Nhat Hoa (Lang Son), and 113 mm in Bac Quang (Tuyen Quang). Water levels on the Luc Nam River at Cam Dan and Chu rose rapidly by 2 to 8 m, reaching warning levels one and two.

In Bac Ninh (formerly the mountainous region of Bac Giang province), rising floodwaters caused localized isolation. All 16 fords in Tay Yen Tu commune were flooded, isolating three villages, and water entered some houses in Thong Nhat village. Authorities mobilized forces to assist with evacuations and ensure safety. The communes of Son Dong, Yen Dinh, Tuan Dao, and Dai Son were also flooded, with water overflowing onto roads, carrying debris. Landslides were reported on Highway 31 and Provincial Road 291, severely impacting traffic.

In Thai Nguyen, heavy rain flooded several streets in the center of Bac Kan ward, causing localized traffic jams.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting stated that until the end of 22/8, the region will continue to experience rain measuring 50 to 120 mm, with some areas exceeding 250 mm. During this period, rainfall intensity could surpass 100 mm in three hours, causing flooding in the Cau, Thuong, and Luc Nam rivers. Peak flood levels in the upstream areas are expected to reach warning levels one and two, while downstream areas will reach warning level one and above.

A high risk of landslides and flash floods has been issued for several communes: Cho Moi, Dan Tien, Kim Phuong, La Hien, Nghinh Tuong, Quang Son, Than Sa, Thanh Mai, Thanh Thinh, Trang Xa, Vo Nhai, Yen Trach (Thai Nguyen); Bang Mac, Nhat Hoa, Tan Thanh, Tan Tri, Vu Lang, Vu Le, Xuan Duong, Yen Binh (Lang Son); Kien Lao, Son Dong (Bac Ninh).
