Kajiki storm wreaks havoc in central Vietnam

Businesses and homes were damaged, roofs blown off, and trees uprooted as Typhoon Kajiki made landfall in Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces with winds of level 10-12.

Businesses along the Thien Cam beach in Ha Tinh province were devastated at 7:30 PM on 25/8. Winds in the coastal area had decreased but strong gusts persisted. The popular tourist beach was shrouded in darkness due to power outages, and cell phone service was intermittent. Photo: Nguyen Dong

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported that at 7 PM, the storm had weakened to 117 km/h, level 10-11, with gusts of level 13, and was moving west-northwest at about 10 km/h. Dien Chau (Nghe An) recorded winds of level 10, gusts of 12; Ky Anh (Ha Tinh) level 8, gusts of 11; and Cam Nhuong (Ha Tinh) level 9, gusts of 12.

The Thien Cam coastal road was littered with fallen trees and signs. Most of the corrugated iron roofs were ripped off by the wind, with many pieces scattered across the road. The 8-meter-high tourist welcome gate was also toppled. Photo: Nguyen Dong

In Thanh Hoa province, streets along the coast of Sam Son ward were flooded with debris. "The high tide combined with the storm winds has thrown bricks, stones, and concrete slabs onto the roads, making them impassable," a traffic police officer said. Some sections of Ho Xuan Huong, Le Loi, and Nguyen Du streets were flooded to a depth of 70-80 cm. Authorities have put up signs prohibiting residents from passing through. Photo: Le Hoang

Along the eastern coast of Ho Xuan Huong Street in Sam Son ward, Thanh Hoa, numerous ironwood and ornamental coconut trees were uprooted by the waves. Photo: Le Hoang

At a hut near Doc Cuoc Temple, the rising tide caused waves to crash into some security guard shacks. Many belongings inside were swept away or damaged. Photo: Le Hoang

Waves eroded the Nam Hai dike in Nghi Son ward, Thanh Hoa, causing landslides at two locations, approximately 100 m and 200 m long, respectively. A local government representative said that authorities are mobilizing machinery to transport soil and rocks to reinforce the dike to ensure the safety of people and property in the Nghi Son Economic Zone. High waves crashed into Hon La port, Phu Trach commune, Quang Tri province. The entire area has lost power. Nguyen Thi Hong, a restaurant owner at the port, said strong winds and high waves began around 5 PM. She and her family were preparing to evacuate when a warning was issued. Photo: Dac Thanh

Many mountainous villages in Quang Tri province were isolated due to moderate to heavy rain, despite being outside the storm's center. Rainfall in the past two hours in the northern part of the province ranged from 100-300 mm, with some areas recording higher levels: Ho Be 316 mm, Tan Lam 332 mm, and Ho Vuc Tron 339 mm.

Heavy rain caused severe flooding on many roads in Tuyen Binh commune, isolating 178 households and 608 people in three villages. In Tuyen Hoa commune, five points on inter-commune roads were flooded, isolating villages, and authorities erected warning signs and barricades. Photo: Dac Thanh
