At approximately 2:30 p.m. on 20/8, Thao Thi Dua, 51, and her 11-year-old daughter, Sung Thi Sua, were crossing a stream near their home in Kham 2 Village, Trung Ly Commune. A flash flood suddenly rushed down from the mountainside, sweeping both of them away.
Family members and authorities began a search, and about an hour later, Dua's body was found about 500 meters downstream. Her family has held a funeral according to local customs. The daughter remains missing.
Tran Van Thang, chairman of the Trung Ly Commune People's Committee (UBND), said the rescue efforts have been hampered by darkness, strong currents, and heavy rain.
The Cha Lam Stream, where the incident occurred, is tens of meters wide in places and has a steep slope, making it dangerous during the rainy season.
