Phu Quoc to demolish illegal tourist resort on 700-meter mountain

Phu Quoc authorities will demolish The Peak tourist resort on Dien Tien mountain in june due to a series of prolonged land and construction violations.

On 29/5, the Phu Quoc special administrative region's Department of Agriculture and Environment announced that the facility owner must dismantle the violating structures themselves before 3/6, or face forced demolition.

Over the past two days, the resort has displayed signs indicating its closure, moved assets, and begun dismantling some structures.

The Peak was constructed in mid-2024 on land owned by Le Trong Dai, situated on a mountain over 700 meters high. Le Trong Dai later leased the land to others for construction and tourism business.

According to enforcement records, in 12/2024, Duong Dong Ward People's Committee documented numerous violations. These included construction not conforming to planning, unauthorized conversion of approximately 5,000 square meters of agricultural land to commercial land, leveling and altering the terrain over an area of 2,600 square meters, and encroachment on public and protected forest land.

Despite administrative penalties and several enforcement decisions issued by authorities to rectify the consequences, the resort owner failed to comply.

The facility owner repeatedly filed complaints and administrative lawsuits against the penalty decisions, but the appeals were rejected by the High People's Court in TP HCM.

Recently, Phu Quoc has intensified efforts to address prolonged encroachment and illegal construction. The locality has dismantled many villas and structures built on public and national defense land.

Starting early june, the special administrative region will enforce the demolition of hundreds of violating structures or those located on land reclaimed for projects. This initiative aims to upgrade urban areas and prepare infrastructure for APEC 2027.
