Tan Son Nhat passenger traffic for summer tourism approaches Tet peak levels

Despite rising airfares, passenger traffic at Tan Son Nhat this summer is projected to increase significantly, with daily peaks reaching 125,000 people, nearly matching some previous Tet holiday peaks.

According to Tan Son Nhat International Airport, from 1/6 to 15/8, the airport expects to handle an average of 720 flights daily, a 15% increase compared to the usual schedule of about 620 flights. Of these, domestic routes will account for approximately 440 flights and international routes about 280 flights each day.

Specifically for June, the airport anticipates serving about 115,000 passengers daily with 670 flights. From early July to mid-August, passenger volume is expected to rise to approximately 125,000 daily passengers and 730 flights. This marks the highest summer passenger volume in recent years, comparable to some past Tet holiday peak periods.

This increase continues the aviation market's recovery trend. Last summer, Tan Son Nhat operated an average of 699 flights daily, serving nearly 119,000 passengers. This demonstrates that demand for air travel and tourism remains high, even as the cost of each trip tends to rise.

Currently, airfares for many domestic routes have increased compared to the off-peak period. This is primarily due to rising operating costs influenced by fluctuating fuel prices and airlines adjusting their ancillary services.

A survey on several booking platforms in late June revealed that round-trip economy fares, excluding checked baggage, for the TP HCM - Da Nang route ranged from 2.5-4.8 million dong per person. Fares for TP HCM - Phu Quoc were approximately 2-3.5 million dong, and TP HCM - Ha Noi from 3.5-5.5 million dong, depending on the airline, booking time, and flight slot.

Service capacity at Tan Son Nhat has also significantly improved following the operational launch of Terminal 3. With a designed capacity of 20 million passengers annually, the new terminal enhances the airport's overall operational capability, creating additional capacity to accommodate high passenger volumes during holidays, Tet, and the summer tourism season.

Before this, during Tet Nguyen Dan 2026, Tan Son Nhat served approximately 178,000 passengers on its peak day, the highest level in over 10 years.

In addition to increasing capacity, Terminal 3 also helps redistribute passenger volume between terminals, reducing pressure at check-in and security screening areas. Currently, flights by Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines, Vasco, Bamboo Airways, Vietravel Airlines, and Sun Phu Quoc Airways operate from Terminal 3, while Terminal 1 serves Vietjet Air flights.
