Tens of thousands of homes in Thanh Hoa submerged in floodwaters

Widespread heavy rain following Typhoon Kajiki and the simultaneous release of water from several hydropower reservoirs have submerged tens of thousands of homes in Cam Thuy, Tong Son, Ham Rong, and other communes, on 27/8/2025.

This morning, floodwaters from the upstream Ma River continued to pour downstream, inundating all seven neighborhoods outside the dike in Ham Rong ward.

Able-bodied residents used round boats to navigate the flooded areas to purchase and stockpile essential supplies. Most of the flooded households in Ham Rong are long-term residents outside the dike, accustomed to flooding during the rainy and typhoon seasons.

A neighbor of Truong had to sit on her roof, waiting for rescue forces as floodwaters surrounded her house.

In neighborhood 7, Ham Rong ward, one house was submerged almost up to its roof. Pham Duc Toan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ham Rong ward, said that seven neighborhoods, from 4 to 10, are currently flooded from 1 to 6 meters deep.

While official figures are unavailable, dozens of communes and wards in Thanh Hoa, including Cam Thuy, Ba Thuoc, Vinh Loc, Nga Son, and Ham Rong, are currently flooded after Typhoon Kajiki. In the photo, police evacuate property for residents of Ba Dinh commune on the morning of 27/8.

Last night, heavy flooding caused an 80-meter breach in the T2 canal dike in Tong Son commune, flooding over 200 hectares of rice paddies. This morning, the Thanh Hoa Provincial Police's search and rescue forces were mobilized to help relocate over 100 tons of rice from a granary near the breach.

A boy in neighborhood 8, Ham Rong ward, was carried by a relative inside the dike to evacuate this afternoon.

According to Ham Rong ward authorities, over 2,100 households with 7,230 residents are currently affected by the flood. Residents are mainly instructed to evacuate in place, moving to higher floors within their homes. The elderly, children, and the sick are prioritized for evacuation to schools, cultural centers, or relatives' homes inside the dike.

Near noon the same day, police and militia were mobilized to use specialized boats to evacuate residents from the flooded area in Ham Rong ward to safety.

Luong Trong Truong, from neighborhood 7, Ham Rong ward, swam through the floodwaters to retrieve food supplied by relatives. His house is currently flooded to a depth of over one meter. "The floodwaters rose very quickly. I stayed up all night and early this morning to move belongings to higher ground to prevent damage," Truong said, adding that the Ma River's water level is only 20-30 cm below the historic flood peak of 2017.

Police are checking deeply flooded households in Ham Rong ward and continuing to evacuate people and property to safety.

Hundreds of households in the Ai Son and Son Van neighborhoods of Hac Thanh ward are also deeply flooded.

The remnants of Typhoon Kajiki brought heavy rain to the area, causing water levels in the Ma, Chu, Buoi, and Cau Chay rivers in Thanh Hoa to rise, exceeding warning level three in many places and causing widespread flooding.
