The event was organized to commemorate Vietnam's National Day on 2/9.
Unity State Prison suffers from dilapidated infrastructure, including deteriorating walls, a scarcity of clean water, and inadequate kitchen and sanitation facilities. During the rainy season, the prison yard frequently floods, increasing the risk of cholera, intestinal diseases, malaria, and skin conditions among inmates. Many inmates live with minimal food and basic necessities, often suffering from respiratory illnesses and diarrhea. Some even have chronic conditions but rarely receive monitoring or treatment.

During the visit, Vietnamese doctors measured blood pressure, distributed medication, and provided health advice and guidance on disease prevention. The medical team also shared knowledge about nutrition, hygiene, and basic first aid with prison staff. A short training session was held on-site to equip medical personnel and prison guards with the skills to handle emergencies.
This activity is the latest in a series of humanitarian missions undertaken by Vietnamese peacekeepers in South Sudan. In April, Field Hospital No. 6 conducted a mass casualty exercise in Bentiu, which was praised by United Nations representatives for its professionalism and rapid response capabilities.
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) was established in 2011 to maintain peace, support political stability, and protect civilians. Vietnam began deploying troops to the mission in 2014. Currently, five individual officers and 63 members of Field Hospital No. 6 are serving there. Over the years, these officers have contributed to showcasing the compassion, discipline, and professionalism of Vietnamese military medical personnel to the world.
