The accident occurred at 5:10 a.m. near the Xuan Hong - Truong Chinh intersection in Tan Thoi Nhat ward (formerly Tan Binh district). The victim was standing behind the excavator when the driver backed up, striking him in the head. The construction unit contacted emergency services, but the victim died after 20 minutes.

The Ho Chi Minh City Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR) said the cause was the excavator's blind spot. The contractor has met with and supported the victim's family and reported the incident to the authorities.

The incident occurred at the XLTN2 contract package (relocation and restoration of infrastructure from Bay Hien station to Tan Binh station) of metro line 2. This work is to prepare the site for the commencement of the main contract packages later this year.

The Ben Thanh - Tham Luong metro line is over 11 km long and costs nearly 47,900 billion VND. It connects downtown Ho Chi Minh City with the northwest gateway and is the city's second metro line.
