Amorim had achieved significant success with the 3-4-3 formation at Sporting Lisbon. Upon his appointment in summer 2024, he fully implemented this system at Man Utd. However, the current "Red Devils" squad did not seem suited to it, leading to disappointing results. They finished 15th in the Premier League last season and had a poor start to the current campaign. Despite this, the Portuguese coach had consistently expressed his commitment to his chosen formation. After a 0-3 loss to Man City in September, Amorim stated, "No one can make me change, not even the Pope. This is my job, my responsibility, and my life. So, I will not change."

However, when hosting Newcastle yesterday, the Portuguese strategist switched from a 3-4-3 to a 4-3-3 formation, which brought new energy to Man Utd. The home team only held 34% possession but had more shots on target and secured all three points with a goal from Patrick Dorgu in the 24th minute.
"In the first half, the only thing that helped us create danger was playing with a back four and concentrating many players in the midfield," coach Amorim said in the post-match press conference at Old Trafford. "Last season, we failed in one-on-one situations outside the box. Therefore, we had to find a playing style that made the players feel most comfortable."
In this match, Amorim also brought on Jack Fletcher, the 18-year-old son of former player Darren Fletcher. He praised his new protege for his humility and diligence.
Beyond the team's performance, Amorim is facing pressure for his limited use of Kobbie Mainoo. Criticism has intensified following his decision to keep the 20-year-old midfielder after Bruno Fernandes' injury, instead of sending him to Napoli to revive his career. Mainoo was again absent from the win against Newcastle due to injury.
"A clean sheet, a back four, and Mainoo injured. I think we don't need a press conference about all the issues. We can go home to enjoy Boxing Day," the Man Utd coach added.
They currently sit fifth with 29 points, level on points and only behind fourth-placed Chelsea on goal difference. Furthermore, the victory against a European qualification rival like Newcastle provides a crucial advantage and confidence. Last season, Newcastle won the League Cup and finished fifth in the Premier League.
