Argentina - Egypt: Messi, Salah start

Superstars Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah are set to start in the World Cup 2026 round of 16 match.

Egypt advanced from Group G in second place, drawing 1-1 with Belgium, defeating New Zealand 3-1, and drawing 1-1 with Iran. In the round of 16, they drew 1-1 with Australia after 120 minutes, then won 4-2 in a penalty shootout. Meanwhile, Argentina topped Group J by beating Algeria 3-0, Austria 2-0, and Jordan 3-1. In the round of 16, the reigning World Cup champions were equalized twice by Cape Verde but won 3-2 in extra time.

Regarding their opponent Egypt, Scaloni praised the African representative, noting their clear playing style, talented coach, and skilled players. "They have only won one match, but they consistently challenge opponents. They will play more aggressively than Cape Verde because they have very good attacking players," said the Argentina national team coach.

If Argentina defeats Egypt in the round of 16, they will face Colombia or Switzerland in the quarterfinals. If they reach the semifinals, Scaloni's team could face England or Norway. The other side of the bracket features Spain against Belgium and France against Morocco in the quarterfinals.

In this World Cup, Messi is shining, leading the scoring charts with 7 goals, alongside Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland. He has also achieved several milestones: playing the most matches (30), scoring the most goals (20), the longest consecutive scoring streak (8), and contributing to the most goals in the knockout stages (12).
