Brazil captain Marquinhos labeled Japanese forward Kento Shiogai's comments about Brazil as "arrogant" ahead of their World Cup 2026 round of 16 clash. Shiogai's remarks, made to Kyodo News, that "Brazil is no longer the powerhouse it once was," became a major talking point within the Brazilian squad before their 29/6 match against Japan in Houston.
Brazil holds a record five World Cup titles, winning in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. However, their last triumph was 24 years ago, and they have not reached a final since, nor are they currently ranked among the world's top 5. Marquinhos confirmed the entire Brazilian squad had heard Shiogai's statements. The 32-year-old center-back stated Brazil would not engage in a war of words but also would not ignore the opponent's remarks. "That's enough," Marquinhos said. "Let them continue to talk, because it only gives us more motivation. We have been in the US for nearly a month, working hard and humbly towards our goal. Let the opponent speak, and we will perform on the field."

Shiogai, 21, has played only 6 minutes in the group stage, making a late appearance in the 2-2 draw against the Netherlands. He currently plays for Wolfsburg, where he scored one goal in 12 Bundesliga matches this season. Marquinhos further characterized Shiogai's statement as showing a degree of arrogance. "Perhaps that is a bit of arrogance from their side," the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) center-back added. "Brazil is still a great team. We need to prove our strength and quality on the field. Every play can be decisive. We will turn those words into motivation to fight for every ball and win deservedly."

At a press conference on 28/6, coach Carlo Ancelotti was also asked about Shiogai's comments. However, the Italian coach declined to respond, stating that Brazil was not discussing the matter. Instead, the team was focused solely on the match and the qualities of their opponent. "We will not participate in a psychological battle," Ancelotti said.
Marquinhos also referenced past lessons, cautioning his teammates against complacency. He cited PSG's unexpected loss to Botafogo at last year's FIFA Club World Cup, where the French club was heavily favored but suffered defeat. "We never underestimate opponents," Marquinhos noted. "Croatia eliminated Brazil in the previous World Cup, despite many considering us the stronger side. At the Club World Cup, PSG also lost to Botafogo despite being considered superior. In football, all assessments must be proven on the field."
The center-back, with 108 caps for the Brazilian national team, distinctly recalled the defeat to Croatia in the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals. Brazil had led 1-0 in extra time but conceded an equalizer just four minutes before the end of the match, ultimately losing in a penalty shootout. According to Marquinhos, that experience served as a crucial lesson, reminding the entire team to maintain focus at every moment. He acknowledged Japan as a quality opponent deserving of a spot in the knockout stage. However, Marquinhos expressed confidence that Brazil is improving after each group stage match.
According to the Opta supercomputer, Brazil has a 70% chance of advancing, compared to Japan's 30%.
