According to the Premier League organizers, Carrick was named manager of the month for January 2026 following an impressive start as Manchester United's interim coach. The former "Red Devils" midfielder took charge of the team for the remainder of the season after Amorim's dismissal, quickly making an impact.

In January, Manchester United secured a 2-0 victory in the Manchester derby before staging a 3-2 comeback against league leaders Arsenal. During the same month, Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior won three matches, but against lower-ranked opponents: Brentford, Crystal Palace, and West Ham.
Beyond Rosenior, Carrick also surpassed Andoni Iraola and Sean Dyche in the running. Notably, Dyche, despite being nominated for manager of the month in January, was dismissed on February 12.
Manchester United also had one manager win the award this season: Amorim in October 2025. However, the Portuguese coach was sacked two months later. Enzo Maresca won the award for Chelsea in November 2025 but was also relieved of his duties one month later.
According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United's internal stakeholders are pleased with Carrick's influence during this transitional period. Football director Jason Wilcox and his team are still evaluating future managerial options, but Carrick is on their shortlist if his performance continues to impress.
Manchester United leadership appreciates Carrick's style, demeanor, and conduct since taking the role. The former English midfielder has advanced significantly further on the club's long-term managerial shortlist than initially anticipated.
Carrick previously built his coaching reputation over three seasons managing Middlesbrough, developing a competitive squad despite limited financial resources.
Beyond Manchester United closely monitoring the 44-year-old coach's performance, Tottenham is also seriously interested in Carrick. The North London club previously considered him in summer 2025 before appointing Thomas Frank. After dismissing Frank, Tottenham has once again set its sights on Carrick.
Tottenham is impressed with Carrick's team organization, tactical clarity, and ability to instill confidence in a squad previously described as lacking direction. Should Manchester United not extend Carrick's contract, he may receive an offer from Tottenham. The North London club is considering several options, including potentially appointing an interim manager until the end of the season.
