Key considerations before VnExpress Marathon Hue 2026

Runners should be aware of key timings and prepare their nutrition and attire before the race in the ancient capital on 19/4.

The VnExpress Marathon Hue 2026, set to attract over 8,000 athletes across three distances—5km, 10km, and 21km—will transform Hue into a vibrant hub for the running community. Final preparations are underway, with organizers and local authorities coordinating closely to ensure optimal race conditions and a rich cultural experience. Participants are encouraged to review essential information regarding timings, race kit collection, nutrition, and attire to ensure a smooth and enjoyable event.

Important timings for the race begin on 17/4, with pre-race activities at Nghinh Luong Dinh on Le Duan street. The opening ceremony is scheduled from 11h to 12h30. Following this, from 13h to 18h, organizers will distribute race kits and open vendor booths. On 18/4, expo areas will operate from 9h to 17h, providing the last chance for runners to complete their procedures before race day.

Alongside the main event, the Kun Marathon for children aged 6 to 10 will also take place. Parents can bring children to Ngo Mon Square to collect race kits from 8h to 18h on 17/4. The children's race is scheduled from 6h to 10h on 18/4.

On the official race day, 19/4, the baggage drop-off area at the starting point opens at 2h30. The 21km distance will start first at 4h, followed by the 10km distance at 5h, and the 5km distance at 6h.

Organizers have established cut-off times (COT) along the course. The 10km course closes at 7h, with a COT at 6,3 km at 6h20. The 5km course closes at 7h15. For the 21km, two control points are set at 9 km at 5h30 and 17,5 km at 7h, before the course closes at 7h30.

After all events are completed, the baggage claim counter will cease operations at 8h. The award ceremony is scheduled from 10h to 12h at Nghinh Luong Dinh.

When collecting race kits, runners must bring their registration QR code and identification documents, such as a Citizen ID card or passport, for verification. For proxy collection, an authorization letter is required. Participants under 18 need a consent form from a parent or guardian. At the counter, runners should carefully check their bib, personal information, registered distance, and accompanying items to address any errors promptly.

Before the race, the most important items are the bib and a pair of shoes familiar from training. The bib should be pinned to the shirt in advance to save time and avoid fumbling. Devices such as GPS watches, headphones, phones, or running belts should also be prepared and organized.

Hue is a destination with a distinct culinary identity. However, the allure of Hue cuisine can easily cause digestive issues for runners who overeat before race day. Within 24 hours before the race, athletes should prioritize familiar, low-fat, and less spicy dishes. For bun bo Hue, runners should ask the chef to omit chili oil, reduce fat, and limit pepper. Dishes like banh beo and banh nam may be suitable for a snack, but avoid excessive salty, spicy dipping sauce or eating them with fresh chili and raw garlic. Richly flavored dishes like com hen, bun hen, banh khoai, or various che (sweet soups) with abundant coconut milk should be saved for after crossing the finish line. The safest approach is to have an early dinner on 18/4, prioritizing easily digestible carbohydrates, staying hydrated, avoiding new foods, and not overeating.

Accuweather predicts that race day in Hue will be relatively cool, around 31 degrees C, but humidity could reach 75%, with potential thunderstorms. While these conditions are not as scorching as many summer races, high humidity can still cause runners to tire more quickly. Therefore, runners should prioritize breathable, lightweight, and moisture-wicking attire. Singlets or technical running shirts, lightweight shorts, and thin socks are popular choices. Materials like cotton should be avoided as they retain sweat, making the wearer feel heavy and causing chafing.
