Dani Olmo accuses Argentina assistant coach of lying

Midfielder Dani Olmo asserts that assistant coach Roberto Ayala has not expressed remorse for his actions after the 2026 World Cup final, while also refuting the Argentine coaching staff member's explanation of the incident.

Speaking for the first time about the post-match altercation between Spain and Argentina, the Spanish player stated that Ayala provided false information when explaining the cause of the incident.

The tension erupted after the final whistle of the 2026 World Cup final on 19/7, where Spain defeated Argentina one-zero. The conflict began when defender Nahuel Molina clashed with Rodri, leading to a scuffle between players from both teams. During the chaos, Ayala approached the area where Dani Olmo and Eric Garcia were observing and struck the Spanish midfielder.

Previously, the 53-year-old assistant coach described his action as "more of a push than a punch", claiming it was a reaction to something Olmo said. However, the Barcelona midfielder completely rejected this account.

"Someone who says they regret something but then justifies a punch by claiming it was a reaction to a statement probably isn't truly remorseful," Olmo told Diari de Terrassa on 26/7. "He is not telling the truth because I did not say anything to him. I also do not need him to apologize. People are not defined by their mistakes, but by the courage to admit them."

Despite the controversy, Olmo emphasized that he wants fans to remember Spain for their playing style and conduct on the field, highlighting football's influence on young people.

"When my children, my family, and all the fans watch the game, I want everyone to be proud of how we play, how we win, and above all, how we behave," the 28-year-old player added. "Football has a significant impact. Players are role models for children and future generations, so that comes with great responsibility."

Roberto Ayala is well-known in Spanish football circles. During his playing career, the center-back, born in 1973, spent 10 seasons in La Liga with Valencia and Real Zaragoza. After retiring, he served as technical director for Valencia for two years. Since 2019, Ayala has been part of the Argentine national team's coaching staff.

"Of course, I regret my actions," Ayala told Valencia Capital Radio on 24/7. "I should not have allowed my emotions or the opponent's actions to influence me. Of course, we also need to set limits. They are exaggerating a bit. However, I will certainly apologize directly if I meet Olmo again."

Members of the Argentine squad faced heavy criticism for their conduct after the 2026 World Cup final, particularly Leandro Paredes, who reportedly punched Spanish players. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee is currently investigating the incident.
